What is child abuse? Child abuse is any mistreatment or neglect of a child that results in non-accidental harm or injury which is uncalled for. Child abuse can include the following types; physical abuse; emotional abuse; sexual abuse and neglect. Reports of child abuse are on the increase in the United States and some believe that the numbers of cases are not reported. There are too many children that are abused by parents or other relatives.

Child abuse has been happening for a long time now. People didn't pay much attention to this before as they do now. It was reported that One-half of all Americans believe child abuse and neglect is the most important public health issue facing this country. There are many things that can lead to child abuse, it includes; immature parents, lack of parenting skills, unreal expectations about a child's behavior, a parents negative childhood experience, or frequent family crisis.

An estimated 1.1 million children were reported to child protective agencies as victims of child abuse or neglect in 2001.

Many people believe that they do not agree with child abuse at all. Cathy stated that "kids should be taken away from parents who beat their kids. That is uncalled for. It a shame that the parents take their frustrations out on their kids." Joanne stated that "Child Abuse makes me sick to my stomach, how can anyone cause harm to an innocent child" In 2001, Child Protective Service (CPS) agencies investigated more than 3.25 million reports of child abuse and neglect throughout the United States.
