Statement of Intent:

My informative piece is a speech that will be addressed to the citizens of India. It is written in first person and language is semi-formal. It spreads awareness of a topic considered to be trivial in modern day Indian society and to men all over the world. It incites deep feelings of women empowerment and education, and recognition of the fact that biologically men and women are not and cannot be treated equally by society. The essay also sheds light on the many taboos and superstitions, created and followed by most Indian communities, about women while they menstruate. I find that the practice and ritual of calling menstruating women "impure" or "untouchable" is a step back for India and this regressive attitude will not be tolerated by the upcoming generation.

Dealing with Menstruation in India

On 15th August, 1947 India fulfilled its destiny, it provided us with 3000km of sovereign, secular and democratic soil.

Soil that the free citizens of India were destined to live on, from the very birth of the nation, men women alike gravitated towards this soil. But I ask myself, am I truly free, am I standing on this soil or am I slipping beneath its many layers, which are trying to supress me again. India has become a man's country. One which has conveniently moulded itself to fit into the palm of a man's hand, a hand that showers offering onto a goddess, and later a hand that throws itself across a woman's face. India has become a country in which a woman is not permitted to discuss or carry on with daily chores, if she is menstruating. Having been raised in the cosmopolitan yet conservative atmosphere of a Hindu family, I deem myself familiar with the four day...
