Research and Evaluation 1 course has presented me the opportunity to prepare a 700-words synopsis of a research article in a professional journal of interest to me. After several considerations, I have selected an article titled, "Effects of critical care nurses' work hours on vigilance and patients' safety," from the American Journal of Critical Care. In this paper, I will identify the following 4 key points of this article: the business research and its purpose, business problem under investigation, the parties involved in conducting the research, and the method used to conduct the research project.
An estimate of 5 million patients are admitted into the critical care units (CCUs) each year, and unlike other patients, these patients are severely ill and rely heavily on the health care professional ability in order to maintain their survival. Therefore, it is critical, as the authors of the article stated, "critical-care nurses must be alert to subtle changes in patients' condition, perform accurate clinical assessment, and respond in an expedient matter."
