Cyberspace and Ethics and Issues

Computer communication and freedom of expression: How should society's need to protect itself be balanced against the individual's right of expression? Is a service provider cooperating in evil if a customer uses the service to publish harmful or malicious materials?

Are their limits the public should be aware about what you can post or say online? There is a definite guideline to follow in this sort of situation, which is common sense. As you would act in a public environment, you would not yell out "FIRE!", if in fact there were none. This could lead to disastrous endings and fates of many innocent people. The same goes for cyberspace. Some material can hurt or destroy a person or his/her reputation. It could also lead people to believe in contrived information, disinformation. If a person decides to spread false information about a company or person, they could be found criminally or civilly liable for their actions.

There is a definite impact when you post on the Internet, no matter how many people in the public are affected. The Net is pretty much a casual environment where people can exchange or post their own ideas, which can be both beneficial and also cause serious consequences. When surfing the net you are no longer anonymous. A skilled investigator can trace your every login, unless you have advanced computer knowledge. If a person was investigated there is usually a motive, which could be the subject matter and content of whatever is being posted. (258, Godwin)
