Decisions in Paradise Part I

A graduate student named Nick has accepted what seems to be an opportunity of a lifetime to work with Aventis Pharmaceutical, a world leader in pharmaceutical products. His role was to be an assistant to the director of strategic planning. Aventis Pharmaceutical offers number of vaccines, which can prevent various diseases, common in areas targeted by natural disasters. The company wants to expend a presence in Kava, an island located in the South Pacific. In this paper, I will assume the role of Nick, provide information regarding identification of main problems faced by management, analysis and evaluation of the site in Kava and suggest a plan of action for Aventis Pharmaceutical.

Aventis Pharmaceutical is internationally recognized pharmaceutical leader focused on patients' needs, which offers a range of essential healthcare assets for the prevention and treatment of human disease.

(Sanofi-Aventis, 2010). The plan is to develop a strategic plan and put into operation an office in Kava a small island in the South Pacific.

Main Problems and Effects

My first visit of the island of Kava had not turned as I imagined. Unlike visiting paradise on earth, Kava presented quite a different reality. While Aventis Pharmaceutical had established a modern workplace in the U.S. with an army of 15000 employees the Kava site was surprisingly terrible with a trailer serving as a provisional office and only one employee, Alex. Alex, my manager carries the role of director of strategic planning and is the leader of the Kava operation. Shortly after the introduction, we began to identify number of obstacles facing management. The list we have created includes topics of population, religion, language barriers, disaster threats, and economy.
