The food in the stomach gets physically ground up and chemically worked on by the gastric juices. At the end of this process, this mixture of partially digested food and gastric juices is given the name chyme...

From the stomach, the chyme travels through the pyloric sphincter valve (which opens when the stomach is full, it allows only small amounts into the small intestine at a time) and into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. The small intestine is 7 meters long and about 2.5 centimeters in diameter, it is made up of three structures the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The small intestine performs three major functions on chyme, it digests carbohydrates and fats, completes the digestion of proteins, and absorbs digested nutrients. The pancreas is located behind the stomach, it secretes pancreatic fluid into the small intestine. The pancreatic fluid enters the small intestines through the pancreatic duct, which joins with the common bile duct just before it enters the intestine.

Pancreatic fluid contains enzymes that digest proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Pancreatic fluid also contains sodium bicarbonate, which neutralizes the Hydrochloric Acid in Chyme (from an acid to a base), protecting the small intestine. The liver is a large brownish colored organ that lies above the stomach in the Abdominal Cavity. One of the functions of the liver is to secrete yellow-brown liquid called bile. Bile is stored in a small sac called the gall bladder. The entrance of food into the small intestines stimulates the release of bile to the small intestines through a duct. One of the main functions of bile is to dissolve cholesterol. Most nutrients are absorbed into the circulatory system through the cells that line the small intestine. The internal surface of the small intestine is lined with fingerlike projections called...
