"Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant" by Anne Tyler shows the struggle to create a sense of homesickness which is a struggle to create the feeling of "home"; Anne Tyler redefines the concept of home to a place where you feel safe no longer is it a nuclear family situation. Family is an important concept in Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant family is two or more people who share values and goals. Family is like air you cannot live without it. "The family is the base from which the individual moves into society and acquires a sense of community." (Eckard) Family is so important that one cannot live without it, and a family is what makes a "home" and a family is what brings people into society.

A vehicle for portraying 'how people manage to endure together-how they grate against each other, adjust intrude and protect themselves from intrusion, give up, and start all over again in the morning."'(Contemporary Authors Online) Families stick together each day they protect themselves and the following day it starts again. Parenting plays a large role in families and Pearl knew the obligation of parents. " Pearl would say, 'when you have children, you're obligated to live."'(Eckard) It is not fair just to leave children to live without parents without a good family therefore parent are required to live as long as possible to support their children and give them the best possibility for a family for a "home."
