The rate of success in managing an organization can be either productive or non-productive. With management the key to success is to have a manager who uses the four functions of management to their advantage. Planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are the functions; the keys to successful management. We look at Dish Network and emphasize the external and internal impacts on globalization, technology, innovation, diversity, and ethics with the company. Dish Network is a nationwide satellite company, branched off of brother company EchoStar. EchoStar is a Fortune 250 company that relays internet and television channels to 13.5 million customers.

Internal factors are the obstacles that the company deals with are: management, manpower, machine, materials and money (WiKiAnswers, 2009). An external factor is what the company has to factor in from outside the organization, such as politics, environment, or technology. Internal and external factors are the things that impact the four functions of management; planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.

Whatever changes, internally or externally, applies to the company and determines the outcome of the organization.

GlobalizationDish Network is a nationwide company that demonstrates globalization, which keeps the company successful. A few wise men said, "Companies that want to grow often need to tap international markets, where incomes are rising and demand is increasing (Bateman, T.S. & Snell, S.A. 2009, p. 1)." Globalization is to outreach to other countries to sell, purchase material for production, or to have international production sites. Globalized organizations have many external factors to consider. Some factors to consider are: laws and politics, economy, borders, new technology arising throughout the world, demographics of where they decide to produce or sell, and social values to consider (WiKiAnswers, 2009). Internal factors of globalization would be the international employees, technological changes, collaborations within countries, and employee culture barrier.

TechnologyWhen it comes to viewing television in the home, Dish Network is ahead of the game because of the 10 satellites in orbit. Dish offers high-tech satellite television with far better picture quality compared to cable. Satellite television allows viewers the option of prime movie channels in high definition. There is also a tutorial channel to train the subscriber how to use their remote to view over 250 video and audio channels that are available. Dish Network also offers recording capabilities with a digital video recorder (DVR), which comes standard.

Dish Network provides 24 hour customer service on their website, which has features such as orders, events, and troubleshooting discrepancies. One service in particular offers the availability of remote access by cell phone. A customer can use his or her cellular telephone to access their digital video recorder, view television, listen to videos, or schedule recordings from anywhere outside their home.

One of the most unique availabilities is that the network founder Charlie Ergen discusses online the newest promotions, programming and upcoming technologies offered by dish network. This allows customers to chat with him directly either by E-mail or phone for any questions about programming or services. Tech forum is another live chat room for the higher technology questions about the receivers and high definition which is the equivalent to a blue-ray disc in picture quality. They give specific times and dates for the shows as well as offer rebroadcast schedules for the people who miss the live show. The external factor of this company would be the innovating companies that are booming, and the competition of Time Warner and Direct TV.

InnovationIn this fast changing world innovation is the key for any company to succeed. The innovation that Dish Network has implemented has made it the leader in its field. They have thought of the future with input from customers and their own employees. These employees use the produce as do millions of customers worldwide. Dish network has changed the satellite TV market by being one of the first companies to launch its own satellites to better serve its customers and sub company EchoStar. They have bought or partnered up with other companies to provide many different options of programming, internet, and phone services at affordable prices.

Dish network provides a management structure which pushes for continued innovation to keep employees happy at all levels of the company by providing flexible work schedules and firsthand product use. Dish network has not only taken control of a market but continues to break or push limits to improving the product and services they provide. They accommodate to all of their divers worldwide customers and employees. Dish network offers local, national, and international channels for each client in high definition TV. As they continue to change with technology so to keep up with the world's demand for even better products and service they are always looking for ways to improve their product. They make sure to follow laws and regulations which have lead the way for them to expand globally.

DiversityIn 1980, Charlie Ergen, wife Cantey Ergen and friend James DeFranco began dish network which was at the time called EchoStar. Their focus was on low cost programming which sold for 20% less than the competing satellite company. By 1996 dish had launched several satellites with control of its programming and satellite equipment. In 1996 the average cost of a satellite was over $700.00, dish decided to sell theirs for $199.00. They have since launched over 10 satellites with subscribers from homes and business numbering over 13.5 million and number one in customer service as well for the past five years.

International programming and new technology has a large impact on cultures throughout the nations. The external factor associated with culture and international programming would be that they now offer 170 international channels in 28 different languages in digital clarity which is the largest in North America; beating the competition. Because of the factors of culture differences there are international programs varying in price range and availability like the American channels. This allows a viewer to get movies, news, local shows, cooking and music in the available language of their choice. Addition advancement to accommodating the international programming Dish Net Work future plan to launch of another high powered satellite with located in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the year 2010.

EthicsEthics is a major impacting factor on the four functions of management. Unethical behavior decreases organizational morale, and externally decreases the confidence and quality of perception of a company. Ethics affect planning in a way that a manager should not set a goal that a company cannot legally or morally achieve. Ethically organizing a company is essential, for in an unethically organized company the work distributes unfairly. Ethical leaders are praised, while unethical leaders are eventually discovered and dealt with accordingly.

The final function, controlling, may be impacted by ethics via reports or documentation. For example, Dish Network could conduct a survey in which 50 per cent of El Paso citizens prefer Dish Network over Time Warner Cable. It would be unethical controlling if it was reported that only 40 per cent preferred Dish over Time Warner. Although it may seem like more of an increase at a later time, incorrect reporting is unethical controlling.

DelegationManagers can use delegation in order to more efficiently execute plans in an organization. Bateman and Snell (2009) write that delegation is the assignment of new or additional responsibilities to a subordinate. Though not needed in small companies, delegation is a necessity in larger organizations. When a leader divides a company into departments and assigns managers to each department, that leader has more time to efficiently conduct his or her responsibilities. Putting off all responsibility to subordinates is unethical, though, so managers must keep a close eye on how they and their employees act.

In keeping up with the technological advances globally and the diversity of their customers Dish Network continues to excel as the leader of satellite TV programming and services. It was founded in the principle and ethics to combine technology and innovation to dominate and lead the satellite TV market both as a business and service.
