Abstract

Diversity and demographic characteristics impact individual behavior in many different ways. Ethnicity, gender, age, financial status, sexual orientation, religious orientation, city, country, job type, skill, ability, personality traits, and personal values and attitude all impact Organizational Behavior. There are positive and negative roles to each. Many are dependent on the views, beliefs, etc. of the person doing the hiring. In this paper, I would like to discuss how gender, age, personality traits, and sexual orientation impact individual behavior in the workplace and in the community.

Diversity and Demographic Impacts on Individual Behavior

Diversity and demographic characteristics impact individual behavior in many different ways. Some of these impacts can be positive while some can unfortunately be negative. According to the text, Organizational Behavior, diversity is defined as "the presence of individual human characteristics that make people different from one another." (Schermerhorn and Hunt and Osborn, 2003) "Demographic characteristics are the background characteristics that help shape what a person becomes".

(Schermerhorn and Hunt and Osborn, 2003) In this paper, I would like to discuss how gender, age, personality traits, and sexual orientation impact individual behavior in the workplace and in the community.

Gender plays a big role in organizations. In today's society, women hold higher positions in organizations than they did twenty to thirty years ago. There are very few differences between men and women that affect job performance. (Schermerhorn and Hunt and Osborn, 2003) Gender does not effect how well a manager performs. Whether a manager is male or female, people should remember that there are excellent managers and there are poor managers. Even though times have changed, there are still individuals out there who feel that a woman should not hold the same position as a man. Women's salaries are still lower then men's despite the changes...
