Do you believe that the type of person we are will determine the choices we make? Do you believe in fate? I think that Oedipus was responsible for his own downfall because of the arrogent, distrusting, and paranoid person he is.

"I Oedipus whom all men call the great," is just one example of Oedipus's Arrogence. He is very Ignorant and conceited as well. This type of personality contributed to his downfall. When the Oricale warned him, he could have very well avoided what was to come by making other choices. Fate is not to blame since Oedipus was arrogent and made the choices he did. He choose to go to the town of Thebes. He choose to kill his father. Fate is not to blame since Oedipus was arrogent and made the choices he did.
