”When I started thinking of which authors should I choose, few difficulties cropped up. After consideration, I decided to start from the very beginning and select the greatest philosopher of antiquity – Socrates, who is widely credited for laying the foundation for Western philosophy. Famous for his view of philosophy as a pursuit proper and necessary to all intelligent men, he is one of the great examples of a man who lived by his principles even though they ultimately cost him his life.

To my surprise Socrates was not mentioned on the `Chicago Canon` list, while he definitely should not have been omitted, for he was the most mysterious figure in all history of philosophy. Despite having written nothing, Socrates (470 – 399 BC), is considered to be one of the most influential thinkers in Europe. He is customarily regarded as the father of political philosophy and ethics or moral philosophy .

Socrates used to spend most of his time walking around the streets just talking with townsfolk or stand contemplating for a few hours in one place. The essence of his activity was that he did not try to instruct people. Just the opposite, he made an impression that he was trying to learn something from them. He used to begin a conversation with questioning, pretending, that he knows nothing. He made his interlocutors see weaknesses in their method of thinking and finally made them distinguish what is good and what is not. Socrates said, that the real knowledge has to descend from the inner of every man, it must not be imposed by others. “Socratic method”, which is answering a question with a question, gave him the possibility to point out weaknesses in Athenians` way of thinking.
