The Dominican Republic has for the past century been an area of very unsettled and non-representative rule. It has been known as representative democracy. Then in 1996 open elections, which were free, began a new government in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican has had its rough times, but since the beginning of President Fernandez in December of 1996 there has been many improvements in the economy. Leading these areas of improvement are the fields of construction, tourism, and even telecommunications. On top of those improvements the government is working harder to improve the electric generating capacity of the Dominican. Something that has helped the electricity issue to get better is the fact that the state electric company was privatized early in 2000.

The main crops of the Dominican Republic are sugarcane, coffee, cotton, cocoa, tobacco, rice, beans, potatoes, corn, bananas, cattle, pigs, dairy products, beef, and eggs. The Dominican Republic exports $5.1

billion worth of items per year. The import level is at $8.2 billion, which leaves plenty of money to be made back to get to even. The Dominican exports mainly to the U.S. and secondly to Belgium. They get most of there imports form the U.S. and the next highest amount they get from Venezuela. The Dominican does not import many items that can not be sold for a great profit.

An influential group has emerged from the Dominican Republic threw the years, and they are the Collective of Popular Organizations (COP). These groups along with many others have formed in order to join together and unite as a nation, and to ensure that everyone is being treated as fairly as possibly. The Dominican Republic does not think to highly of these types of groups, but they are allowed if they do not show signs of aggression.
