One of the greatest things that teenagers look forward to is getting their driver¡¦s licence and getting the freedom to do whatever they want. Ever since graduated licensing began five years ago, on April 1,1994, many people have made good and bad comments about it.

The government has recently said that ever since graduated licensing started, there have been fewer accidents involving young drivers. Looking at it another way, it costs consumers less money, beacause fewer cars need to be repair. By having graduated licensing , there are fewer unexperienced young drivers on our roads. Also, insurance companies are a lot happier because they don¡¦t suffer too much by having to pay out claims. If there are complications in getting a licence, then fewer people will take the test. They might consider taking public transportation, which is a very good thing to do for our environment.

On the other hand, ever since graduated licensing began, many teenagers and some parents, have started to complain.

The teenagers have said that nowdays getting a licence is too complicated and too strict. They think that it is not fair to them. They thinl graduated licensing is designed to penalize all young drivers, but not every teenagers drives dangerously. Parents also said that fees and driving courses are too expensive, just to get a license. Parents should not complaint about the price of taking driving lessons because those driving lessons will make their children better drivers, which might save their lives later on. Teens also complaint that if they do not have a licens, they find it difficult to get transportation to go to work. They will have to ask their parents to drive them everywhere, which drives the parents nuts.

In responding , one can say that teenagers always complain about the ¡§grown up¡¨ world and its rules. Teens find it rather hard to be part of the grown up worl until they have the licence to go out on their own. Basically, the whole concept of graduated licencing is not so complicated. There are only a few changes: 1) There must be a fully licensed driver beside you with at least four years of driving experience in the G1 level. 2) There is a year waiting period between the G1 level and G2 level. 3) New drivers may only drive in cities, not on highways, and only during daytime hours. Even though there is a 1 month waiting period between G1 level and G2 level, it can be shortened to 8 months by taking a driver¡¦s insurance training course. During this course, the driver will learn more about techniques on driving, and it will cost less when getting car insurance later on.

I understand getting a license is difficult, but in the end everything you go through is worth it. The driver will have more experience, more time to learn, and the driver will learn to drive with others as well as driving on your own. So I think that establishment of graduated licenseing is a good thing for teenagers and for society. When you take your final test, they know you have expericence in driving with others and by yourself. It will also teach you responsibilities because in the G2 level or any level, you cannot have alcohol in your system whatsoever, not even below the legal limit. I personally think the government did the right thing in establishing graduated licenseing. Who could have known? A few little changes may have saved so many lives and made our world a better and safer place to live in. Everyone feels safer knowing that the people who are driving with them on the road have more knowledge and experience.
