Suspense and Conflict are two of the five elements of literature that make up a story. Suspense adds the feeling the fears of what will happen next. Conflict makes a question interesting by making the reader ask questions like "why or who." Conflict can bring disruption and a turn to a story. Conflict can create suspense in a story when it challenges the reader to guess what might happen as a result of the conflict. These are two of the most important elements of literature because they bring life to the story.

When conflict is added to a story it can bring it to life by making the reader question the author. "Nat listened to the tearing sound of splintering wood and wondered how many million years of memory was stored in those little brains, behind the stabbing beaks, the piercing eyes, now giving them this instinct to destroy mankind with all the deft precision of machines"(323).

This paragraph makes one stop and think about what the writer was implying. This is the best way for an author to intrigue the readers and make them want to find out more. In "The Birds" the conflict was the birds. Trying to continue daily life while being under attack by killer birds was the conflict or problem. In "Black Boy" the main character fought getting beaten up by the gang down the street. That brought conflict when he was trying to go to the store. "The Scarlet Ibis" had conflict also. The boy was born with problems and this brought conflict to the family's everyday routines. There is conflict in every story you read, you just have to know how to find it.
