The Heartbreak Kid centres on the coming of age relationship between a teacher and a wild and spirited student. The teacher, Christiana Poppadpolis jolts the young man Nick Polides sexuality beyond belief. This story is in the Australian-Greek life upbringing which Nick is shown the truth about street life. Christiana is locked into traditions of how women are restricted into Greek traditions of women in the work place. Also how she commits herself into destined life of marriage with children which leaves her living across the street with her mom and dad.

Christina is a young teacher from a privileged Greek-Australian background. She has just been assigned to a school in a rough neighborhood, and has entered into the fray of its politics by at first supporting the majority of the kids against the school's sports coach decision to play footy the kids want to play soccer, the coach wants them to play footy and nothing else.

Eventually she volunteers to coach the team and she and Nick begin to spend more time together outside of school hours. Soon their mutual attraction ignites into an illicit and passionate affair. The father of Nick, one of the team's more outspoken and talented players, comes forward to coach them. He had been a world-cup level player for the Greek national team. Meanwhile Christina Papadopoulos is a sweet and well-meaning 22-year-old school teacher, engaged to an ambitious, business-obsessed fiancé Dimitri, is slowly fading and she is beginning to realize and respond to Nick's admiration for her. After she finally gives in to his advances and discovers that she is happy she did, all hell breaks loose at the school, in her family, in Nick's family, and with her fiancé.
