Taoism (is also known as Daoism) is one of the two great religious traditions that originated in China. The other philosophy in China is, Confucianism. Taoism and Confucianism begin about the same time, in the sixth century B.C. China's third great religion, Buddhism, which came to China from India.

One rule in Taoism and Buddhism is that they believe in a form of reincarnation. Reincarnation is the idea that life does not end when one dies. The goal in Taoism is the achieve Tao, to fin the way, Tao is the ultimate reality, a presence that existed before the universe was formed and which continues to guide the world and everything in it. The focus is not to worship one got, but instead on coming into harmony with Tao. Tao is the essence of everything that is right. Desire, ambition, fame, and selfishness are seen as interference to a compatible life.

It is only when on clear himself of all desires that Tao be achieved. By abandon every material distraction; the Taoist is able to concentrate on life itself. The longer his life, the closer to Tao he is assume to have become, Eventually the hope is to become immortal. This is the afterlife for a Taoist--to be in harmony with the universe. The Chinese character for Tao is a combination of two characters that represent the words head and foot. The character for foot represents a person's direction or path. The character for head also suggests a beginning, and the foot as and ending. Therefore, the character of Tao is the circle of heaven and earth. Taoists believes birth is not a beginning and death is not an end.

The followers of the Buddha believe life goes on through a recitation of rebirths. The eternal hope for all followers...
