1. Ethical Topic

Thesis:

The word, "Ethics" are usually to set a list of guidelines that give us a foundation to concealing our moral actions. As humans, we have our own personal way of thinking that enables our daily actions through our moral dilemma. Ethics is a powerful word, it helps enable us as an individual, community and a person of faith as a whole. In the American drama film, "The Shawshank Redemption", which was written and directed by Frank Darabont and starring Tim Robbins and Moran Freeman depicts many unethical issues that mainly involve through physical harassment and financial scamming. This movie clearly shows religious aspects through the cruel punishment from the captain guards onto other prisoners, money laundering where the warden demands the prisoners to work on his construction projects and keeping all the revenue came from those projects, and as well as Andy Dufresne's unethical character where he participated in fraud and false identification towards the end of the movie.

1st Paragraph:

In the beginning of the film, it clearly shows the theme of imprisonment and harassment by the prison guards towards the inmates.

- first example, expand the part where the Captain Hadley beats one of the man to death on the first night when Andy stays at Shawshank Prison. relate to the aspect of personal response (one of the ethical experiences)

- second example, explain the part where the captain threatens that he will push Andy down the rooftop (showing his power) quote this example from (Hadley says "Step aside boys this guy having himself an accident") relate to the aspect of contrast (intorable/unfair) one of the ethical experiences because guards do not have the right to assault or kill one of the inmates in the prison.

2nd Paragraph:

Besides the theme of harassment, the theme of corruption of crime is revealed by the warden where he uses Andy's knowledge with his accounting skills, and underbids contractors on construction jobs through the help of prisoners for his own personal benefit.

- example 1 + quote: "Its clean as a virgin's whistle? Cleaner. By the time Norton retires, I will have made him a millionaire." Shows the telogical method in religion. The warden doesn't care what kind of method he uses to become whatever he wants to become. It shows that by doing evil it can lead to a good end, showing the weakness of the teleological method.

- by helping the Warden, Andy gains trust in the Warden and in this leads to his downfall in the end when Andy escapes the prison, and gives all the evidence to the police on the Warden's corruption in Shankshaw's Prison.

3rd Paragraph:

Not only has this movie showed harassment, corruption of crime but also the unjust character of Andy Dufresne through his fraud and false identification.

- first example by escaping the prison it shows that he is a convict and this is already illegal

- second example uses false identity to clean out the false bank account is illegal as well leading to jail time (in a way its not illegal, because Warden was the one who told him to put all his money into a fake separate account

Conclusion:

- the theme of harassment and imprisonment, corruption of crime and Andy Dufresne shows the unjust and unethical situations that are present in this film.

2. Morality Topic

The word, "Morality" involves an understanding of human behavior in terms of right and wrong. 1st paragraph: theme of imprisonment immoral naturalism naturalism denies human freedom - it maintains that your promises and commitments do not come from motives or intentions but from a genetic predisposition. Naturalism enies the possibility of ethics and morality - can you be responsible for your actions if what you do is a tural physical process over which you have no control.

2nd paragraph: theme of corruption and crime immoral

3rd paragraph: Andy's character amoral believing in hope despite what Red said about hope ("hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane"), ("hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies"). human freedom freedom = responsibilities.

Red Redding (the film's narrator, prison entrepreneur, Andy's close friend)

Tommy (young convict) got assassinated outside while talking to the warden because he confessed that he knows what really happened and who killed Andy's wife and her lover.
