Ethics Development, Understanding, and Application Paper

Ethics refers to principles that define behavior as right, good and proper. These principles do not always dictate a single moral course of action, but provide a means of evaluating and deciding among competing options. Values are a principle, standard, or quality considered worthwhile or desirable. To me morals deal with the judgment of goodness or badness of human action and characters. A belief is what an individual believes or accepts as true.

Ethics to me means to take into account every aspect involved in any given situation, peoples' feelings, thoughts, and well-being, both now and in the future, and act as best one can to achieve the most satisfactory outcome for all concerned. From my viewpoint, acting in an ethical manner comes from each and every individual, each having learned from the environment in which they have grown and developed.

The most ethical individual I knew was my dad.

He taught us that ethics is making a decision that you did not have to defend and if necessary you make the same decision again. He said that ethics is about putting your principles into action. Consistency between what we say we value and what our actions say we value is a matter of integrity. He believed that ethics is about self-restraint. It is about not doing what you have the power to do. Just because an act is permissible or you can get away with it is right. It is about doing what is right, not about what you have the right to do. He also taught us that being ethical bring its own reward. It can earn you the admiration of loved ones, the respect of your peers and develop self-esteem.
