Joe Jenkins Ms. Mathai English 12-3 8 May 2002 Should euthanasia be considered a murder or should it be considered mercy killing. This is not yet legal in the United States but only allowed in only some countries around the world. It is a very controversial topic, especially in certain kinds of religions. For example, the catholic absolutely disowns euthanasia. I personally think euthanasia is a good thing because it helps people who are dying and suffering, so instead of suffering doctors should be able to perform euthanasia on their patients.

Euthanasia comes from the Greek words easy death. The definition of euthanasia is defined in one dictionary as the act of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals in a relatively painless was for reasons of mercy. Passive voluntary euthanasia is distinguished differently from active voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide. (these practices even more controversial then the others) Active euthanasia is when a doctor gives a hopelessly ill patient an injection of deadly drugs, but only if the patient ask for it.

In assisted suicide a patient is given a prescription for a lethal dose of pills. The real questions that are asked are, when is a patient or person to sick to live anymore? Or is it right to let someone kill themselves? Why does just one doctor have the authority to make a decision on whether or not someone should not live anymore. Even with all the court cases and rulings in favor of euthanasia, it still remains a contested issue. If a patient wants to end his life because of a medical reason or his or her state of mind or being.
