Global warming has been the center of attention since the last two centuries. Indeed, we are currently in the 21st Century and global warming has been affecting our earth since the 19th century. This is a term given to the "rise in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans". Not only is this a present problem all around the world, global warming is projected continuation. For this reason, many predictions have been made regarding new energy sources, new energy exploitations sites… This is where the Arctic comes in. Due to Global Warming, the Arctic ice cap has been melting; therefore natural resources in the arctic will become available for future exploitation. The resources that many countries want to get their hands on are oil and gas. These countries are bordering the Arctic Circle: the United States, Canada, Russia, Denmark, and Norway.

During the last few years they have been looking to extend their claims to the natural resources present beneath the ice-covered ocean.

In this essay, we will first examine the accessibility and the potential oil/gas reserves present in the Arctic Circle. We will then move on to current Arctic tensions between countries that are related to the impending oil and gas exploitations.

As you may already know, oil and gas are mostly resources present in Saudi Arabia, Venezuela… Countries that are politically not very stable compared to developed countries. Countries such as China, the United States, and Russia… are trying to find an alternative root instead of depending on oil countries. In other words, they want to depend on their own resources. After discovering that the Arctic Circle was melting and exposing oil, gas and other precious minerals. China, Russia… decided to...
