In this photograph, the high contrast and tonal image serves to its advantage of depicting an event that happened during World War II. It looks very harsh, but yet so warlike and real. The remarkable element of this photograph is the depth of the explosion. The dead trees in the foreground separate the viewer from the actual explosion but still allow us to experience it.
