In this photograph, the high contrast and tonal image serves to its advantage of depicting an event that happened during World War II. It looks very harsh, but yet so warlike and real. The remarkable element of this photograph is the depth of the explosion. The dead trees in the foreground separate the viewer from the actual explosion but still allow us to experience it. The four soldiers are sitting there, not paying any attention to what is going on around them in the background,.

This photograph the displays the absolute power of explosions that sometimes humans ignore. This is closely related to the idea of violence and the devastation that can come as a result. Eugene Smith wanted to document an event that occurred during World War II, while showing how awesome and real power and violence are.
