Fahrenheit 451 tells a story about a fireman named Guy Montag whose job it is to burn books and homes of the people who keeping them. The setting of this story takes place in a metropolitan city in the future where books are banned and burned if found. Guy is in favor of burning books until he meets Clarisee, a seventeen-year-old girl who changes his attitude. One day out on a mission, Guy steals a book and hides it in his house. His boss, Captain Beatty, seeing a change in him, starts to suspect Guy might be hiding books. Beatty invites Guy on a house burning mission and they drive straight to Guy's house. Beatty tries to place Guy under arrest but they fight and Guy kills him. In a panic, he runs into the woods to hide. There he meets a man named Granger. Granger is part of a nationwide network of book lovers who have memorized many great works of literature.

While still in the woods hiding, enemy jets arrive and bomb the city. Everyone and everything is destroyed except Granger and Guy Montag, who start over and create the new city.

Guy Montag is the main character of Fahrenheit 451. In the beginning of the book, he is presented as being hasty and ignorant. He always follows orders without thinking about the consequences and is easily taken advantage of. However, after meeting the seventeen-year-old Clarisse, his outlook on life begins to change. Guy realizes that books actually have a purpose and he begins to read and quote them. He changes into a person who thinks on its own and with a new mission to save books.
