Frame Relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode

Frame Relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) are high speed, wide area, data transfer services which allows for the transfer of variable length frames, or fixed length cells across a wide geographical area. These services are generally intended for data applications that are characterized by bursts of traffic across a wide geographical area, such as Local Area Network (LAN) connectivity. Fixed bandwidth connections are also supported under the ATM service option. Access speeds of 56 Kbps to 148 Mbps are supported.

Frame Relay Service is a statistically multiplexed data service that allows for the transfer of variable length frame across a wide geographical area. Users access the service via a digital connection, or local loop, to a frame relay port. The user port is also referred to as User-Network-Interface (UNI).

This service uses a connection oriented Permanent Virtual Circuit (PVC) to establish a connection between two Data Link Connection Identifiers (DLCIs) on two different frame relay ports. A single access line can have many PVCs that can connect to other frame relay access ports.

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Service is a statistically multiplexed data service that allows for the transfer of fixed length cells across a wide geographical area. Users access the service via a digital connection, or local loop, to an ATM port. The local loop connections to the ATM switch are not subject to mileage charges. The user port is also referred to as a User-Network-Interface (UNI). This service uses a connection oriented Virtual Channel Connection (VCC) or Virtual Path Connection (VPC) to establish a connection between two different ATM ports.
