Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley Published by Bantam Books- in 1981, written in 1816- 206 pages Setting: This book is set in Geneva, in the 1700's.

Main Characters: The main character in this novel is Victor Frankenstein, a young man. He belongs to the upper social class and is very intelligent. He is extremely interested in science, particularly in Biology, the science of life. The other main character is the fiend of Frankenstein. Although not human, he is capable of all human emotions, and is remarkably smart.

Page 42 About the Author: Mary Shelley was born in 1797, in England. She married William Shelley very early in life.

In 1816, it was proposed between her, Byron and Dr. Polidori to write a story about the supernatural. Mary then wrote Frankenstein, and the others wrote about vampyres. Frankenstein was published in 1818, when Mary Shelley was only 21 years old. She died in 1851.

Plot: Victor Frankenstein tells his life story to the captain of a ship in the Arctic. He starts when he was young, as an adolescent, when he first started learning about science. He expressed his desire to rise above the rest of humanity, and fulfill what no man had yet dared to dream about: creating a living being. He talked about how he for months toiled in trying to do this, and finally succeeded. He was shocked at how hideous his creation was, and immediately ran away. When he returned, the monster was gone.
