Management is creative problem solving. This creative problem solving is accomplished through four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. The nature and work of management involves effectively applying these four functions to achieve organizational success. The purpose of this paper will be to explain the four functions of management and how it relates to my department.

Planning is a major function in my department's management process. Planning is to specify the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals. (Snell & Bateman, 2004). Without effective planning you cannot effectively organize, control or lead fellow employees. In the mortgage industry we are constantly planning. We plan on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

On a daily basis we plan our schedule in order to use our time wisely. I am in the sales division of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, and with out using a time management plan I could not be successful at my job.

On a weekly basis I am required to meet a quota in outbound calls, applications and volume for the week. Having a time management plan helps me to meet my goals. Monthly we have a certain goal that has to be met as a team. We start planning at the beginning of the month to meet the final monthly goal.

The next function in my company is organization. Organizing is assembling and coordinating the human, financial, physical, information, and other resources needed to achieve goals. (Snell & Bateman, 2004). My job is to plan effectively and generate business. Once a file is received, I am to check the file for all required documentation.
