What are the four functions of management? This paper will define the four functions of management and how these functions relate to one’s our organization. The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading and controlling.

PlanningThe meaning of planning is setting performance expectations and goals for groups and individuals to work toward achieving objectives. Planning includes the measures that will be used to determine whether expectations and goals are being met. Involving employees in the planning process helps them understand the goals of the organization, what needs to be done, why it needs to be done, and how well it should be done (Performance Mgt., nd).

OrganizingThe meaning of organizing is the act of deploying the resources needed to achieve an identified goal or attain a desired result. For any enterprise, organizing is critical to success. Yet many managers go through work day-after-day without ever considering whether the resources at their disposal are effectively deployed.

Organizing is creating the internal managerial arrangement of the business. The focal point is on division, coordination, and control of tasks and the flow of information within the organization. Managers give out responsibility and authority to jobholders in this function of management (Higgins, 1994).

LeadingOne deals mostly with humans than machines in management. Therefore to achieve ones objectives one has to motivate and lead people who are relevant to achievement of ones objectives. When leading people, motivate them and constantly communicate with them, they will be interested in carrying out what had been due to them. Unless people are properly led they will not do the intended task. People need to be constantly motivated and directed to perform the intended task one expects out of them. The achievement of ones objective will then be certain (Wickremasinghe, 2001).
