IntroductionEvery business has its own set of management needs and each manager has his or her own personal style of management. Though each manager has his or her own personal style of management, each manager must carry out the same fundamental functions of management. The Chinese implemented four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling around 1100 B.C. (Bateman T., and Snell S., 2004, Appendix A). These same four functions of management govern today’s modern business world. I work for Pre Paid Legal Inc. as an independent associate, marketing specialist, promoting legal and identity theft services across the United States. In my position with Prepaid Legal all four functions of management are a necessity. The purpose of this paper is to define the four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling and to explain how each function relates to the organization I work for.

PlanningPlanning can be defined as setting goals and coming up with a working strategy to implement set goals.

Once set goals have been established activity begins. Managers must analyze existing needs and determine possible future needs. This will aid in determining methods, resources and so forth that will be needed to carry out the working strategy. Managers also need to know what tasks need to be performed and who will be available to carry out these responsibilities.

As an independent associate planning is probably the most important function of my management responsibilities. I have a team of about 40 people all across the U.S. and of these 40 only about 15 truly take their business seriously. My responsibility is to plan team conference calls to get everyone together and give out new information and brush up on training once a week.
