Gary Paulsen was born on May 17, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He spent a lot of time in the library because he had problems at home. He had a hard time in school too. He loves horses and dogs (he has many). He lives on a ranch in Becida, MN and also spends time in La Luz, New Mexico. He is married to an illustrator, Ruth Wright Paulsen. Gary Paulsen writes his books about things he has really experienced in his life. He really has been in a forced landing of a plane like in Hatchet. Mr. Paulsen has run the Iditarod too, like you will find in Dogsong. He was told not to write for boys , but he did and has been very successful. He writes on four day stretches, then takes a couple days off. He has been honored as a Newbery Honor Winner three times and has written more than 80 books
