Imagine being happily married to the man of your dreams and the two of you decide that you all are ready to start a family. You find out that you and your husband will be expecting a baby in the next 9 months. Over the next 9 months this is the most exciting time in your life because you cannot wait to see your little boy or little girl. The moment has finally come and your little boy or little girl has arrived. Just as the doctor has been explaining to you and your husband during your pregnancy you have a healthy baby. It's love at first site, and you think you have the perfect child until the physician starts running a long list of statistical data explaining that your child has a 99% chance of a heart condition and life expectancy is about 32yrs.

Then the physician says to you if you decide to have another child you have the option to have that child genetically engineered without any defects. Would you consider this option? This paper will discuss the film Gattaca and how the director Niccol portrays how genetic engineering could remove free will, cause discrimination, and ethical issues in society.

The Gattaca film director Niccol points out in the film that if the society ever figures out the code to genetic engineering and begins to offer genetic engineered children to couples this could ultimately have an effect on the social order of the world.
