This statement indicates that he had knowledge of what type of individual she was personally just from listening to her lecturing and persuasion to spare her life.
The grandmother's role in the story comes off as overbearing and vain. She is a woman that comes from a traditional background given that she often talks about her wealthy upbringing with her family. In the story her attitude frequently changes to accommodate the circumstances she encounters. Throughout the story she repeatedly attempts to take control over of the situation even though it was a family planned vacation. Before they left for vacation, she kept insisting that they should go visit Tennessee in order to be reunited with old acquaintances.

She attempts to manipulate Bailey by making him feel guilty for going on this trip to Florida instead of Tennessee. She claims that the kids should travel and see different parts of the world by visiting Tennessee, which only shows the reader that she is narrow-minded. The beginning of the story states the obvious of what kind of individual the grandmother due to the fact that during the car ride she would make comments on what it was like being brought up in her time, which shows the reader her conceited personality.
