Summary The story begins with Nick Carraway, the narrator, talking about his father's point of views on life and people. He also talks about how his grandfather's brother started his lineage in the U.S. His great uncle sent a substitute for himself during the Civil War and started a hardware business in Minnesota that Nick's father still runs today. Nick moved from his rural life in Minnesota after enlisting in the army and fighting in the World War I. He moved to New York to learn about the bond business. He intended on sharing a house with a guy but the man was relocated for business purposes. So, he rented a house in West Egg alone. West Eggs house area was a place for the newly rich. Nick's next-door neighbor on West Egg was a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who lives in a giant mansion and throws a big party every Saturday night.

Nick drove out to East Egg one day for dinner with his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom. They introduced a woman named Jordan Baker. Nick and her later on begin to have a close relationship. Nick surprisingly finds out at dinner that Tom has a girlfriend named Myrtle Wilson. She lives between New York City and West Egg, and she was married to a man named George Wilson.

Later on Nick learns more about Gatsby by attending the parties and hear useful information from people. He learns that Gatsby knew Daisy in Louisville in 1917, and he was deeply in love with her then. Gatsby wild parties were only an attempt to impress Daisy and to try to bring some attention to himself. Nick set up Gatsby to meet with Daisy and bring back their love.
