Introduction

Before we discuss how greenhouse effect and global warming affects the culture of Indonesia, we first need to know what is greenhouse effect and global warming.

Greenhouse Effect

The greenhouse effect is the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere (water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, etc) trap energy from the sun. Without these gases, heat would escape back into space and Earth's average temperature would be about 60ºF colder. Because of how they warm our world, these gases are referred to as greenhouse gases.

How does Greenhouse Effect Work?

Huh? You must be confused. How does this work? You must be asking yourselves. Well let me explain it more clearly in simple layman's language.

There are three ways in which heat gets transferred. They are: Conduction, Convection and Radiation. We also know that the main source of heat in our world is the sun.

However the sun is far away from the earth and there is no medium for heat to reach the Earth. That is why we say that Heat reaches the Earth by Radiation as radiation requires no medium. It is a fact that the heat emitted by the Sun is in very short wavelengths. These wavelengths easily pass through the special glass of a greenhouse. This is how a greenhouse gets warmed up.

Now that was the easy part. The problem is that how to stop the Plants in the greenhouse from reflecting all of the heat which enters the greenhouse. This is where the knowledge of Physics is applied. It is also a fact that the reflected heat of the plants is in long wavelengths. That is why the glass of a greenhouse is such that it allows short wavelengths to pass through but...
