Grendel is a powerful and intelligent monster. He had been at war with a band of humans for twelve years. Grendel lives in a dark and gruesome under water cave with his mother. He is very curious and, in his early years, finds a way to escape this terrible place and enter the world. One night he gets trapped in a tree. A band of humans led by Hrothgar approaches him and attacks Grendel. They are very close to killing Grendel, but his mother arrives just in time to save him. Grendel is fascinated by the Harper's music and tries to join the humans, but is attacked by guards. He visits an ancient dragon that lives within the kingdom. The dragon speaks for some time. The dragon puts a spell on the young monster, making him impervious to human blades. Grendel becomes a creature of pure destruction. He carries many raids on Hrothgar's meadhall, Herot.

A young king had risen to power nearby and soon his property bordered Hrothgar's. Hrothgar is afraid he can not stand against an attack from the new king. He gets his people together and forms an army to march. The young king is unprepared. He offers Hrothgar his young sister Wealtheow. Hrothgar accepts and marries her. By the twelfth year, Grendel had become weary of his yearly routine. He is desperate for a challenge. Led by Beowulf a band of warrior's land on Hrothgar's shore. Grendel senses something. Beowulf assures Hrothgar that he can slay Grendel and gathers all his men. Unable to resist the challenge, Grendel attacks. Beowulf is stranger than any human Grendel had ever met. Beowulf rips Grendel's arm off. He then runs home and dies.
