Asians have been in the United States for a long time. The history of Asians in the United States is the history of dreams, hard work, prejudice, discrimination, persistence, and triumph. The term Asian Americans are Americans of Asian descent. They include groups such as Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Cambodian Americans and others whose national origin is from the Asian continent. Today, Asian Americans are becoming a significant population. Demographically, they are the fastest growing ethnic group. They have doubled their population between 1960 and 1970, between 1970 and 1980, and again between 1980 and 1990. Economically, Asian Americans have the highest median household income of all households at $37,007 in 2009.1 It has not always been this prosperous or that easy. This is all important in learning where Asians have come from, why they came here, and how they have become so successful in the United States.
