Asians have been in the United States for a long time. The history of Asians in the United States is the history of dreams, hard work, prejudice, discrimination, persistence, and triumph. The term Asian Americans are Americans of Asian descent. They include groups such as Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Cambodian Americans and others whose national origin is from the Asian continent. Today, Asian Americans are becoming a significant population. Demographically, they are the fastest growing ethnic group. They have doubled their population between 1960 and 1970, between 1970 and 1980, and again between 1980 and 1990. Economically, Asian Americans have the highest median household income of all households at $37,007 in 2009.1 It has not always been this prosperous or that easy. This is all important in learning where Asians have come from, why they came here, and how they have become so successful in the United States.

Each generation writes its own version of history which is especially true in the case of Asian American history. Asian immigration has been so controversial. Asian Americans emerge in each historical period. Either it has been negative or positive it has affected their reputation as an American worker. To this day, many stereotypes continue to play a key role in shaping policy decisions related to Asian Americans. One can hardly understand American history without knowing the crucial role people of Asian ancestor have played in shaping our past, politics and culture. American workers can learn from Asian history to shape our future in the workplace.
