Introduction

"Recruitment is the process of generating a pool of capable people to apply for employment to an organization, and Selection is the process by which managers and others use specific instruments to choose from a pool of applicants a person or persons most likely to succeed in the job(s), given management goals and legal requirements." (Bratton and Gold 2003: 221)

Globalization has resulted in a new more dynamic international workplace. The ability to adapt and respond to customer needs has now become the forefront in global competitiveness for a firm. The basis of an organization is deeply rooted in its ability to attract and retain global talent to achieve its competitive advantage. New market trends have translated into enhanced customer expectations and the need to be responsive to their needs is paramount in a firm's success.

Increasing global competition through international market segmentation has intensified product variety and being able to differentiate through coordinated HR strategies could be considered a precursor to maximum profitability.

An organization needs to realize the global environment and be able to effectively harness and leverage a quality labour pool as a key success factor. The quality of a firm's labour pool will dictate future outcomes in terms of maximum profitability. By being able to attract and retain talented individuals that are able to respond to customers needs in a timely fashion will be the only edge over a firms competitors. Global talent procurement has now become a standard in truly being a global firm. The HR function in the international context will face a multitude of social, economic, political, and technological barriers.
