"To kill a mocking bird" is about a six year old girl called Jean Louise Finch but is known as Scout and she is the narrator of the book. She tries her hardest to be one of the boys and avoids wearing dresses, she spends her time with her older brother Jem and her best friend Dill. Jem is ten years old (at the start). Throughout out the book Jem struggles with racism and intolerance but even though he goes through all this he is there to help their father Atticus Finch bring her up and to show her to respect Atticus and the other elders around her. Scouts best friend Dill spends time with them in the summer as he stays with Miss Rachel. He comes from a broken home but tells storys to Scout and Jem about his father but he cant stand his home.

There are three main points in this book which are racism, prejudice and courage. The racism issue comes in to the novel near the start when Tom Robinson is in court for the supposed rape of Mayella Ewell. Atticus was called names such as 'nigger lover' but Jem and Scout supported their father and was taught that black people are equal and there is no huge difference between black and white people except their skin colour.
