What is thyroid disease and how could it affect you? Most people are unaware of what thyroid disease is and its effects on the body. In this essay I will share my own personal experiences in living with thyroid disorders and the way it has affected me and my daily life. Thyroid disease goes much deeper than simply being put on medication. It is a daily battle just to feel "normal."Many people do not realize that the thyroid hormones affect virtually every metabolic activity in the body. It affects every cell throughout your body, including your brain cells. The thyroid hormone keeps everything running. Without enough thyroid hormone, the metabolism slows down. Other body functions slow down as well. The mind can't function normally and the body feels fatigued.

Too much thyroid hormone results in an overactive thyroid known as hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism causes everything in the body to go into high speed.

Too little thyroid hormone results in under active thyroid known as hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism causes everything in your body to go into slow motion. With either too much or too little your body does not function properly.

For years, I unknowingly lived with hyperthyroidism. To me hyperthyroidism was normal. Looking back, I now realize I had all the classic symptoms; nervousness, irritability, difficultly sleeping, my hands always had tremors and I had a major intolerance to heat. I ate a large amount of food and never gained a pound. This was life as I knew it. Later I found out my heart was beating at an alarming rate of 100 to 120 beats per minute.

A doctor noticed I had severe swelling in my neck. I never realized how puffy my throat was until he mentioned it. I went to see an endocrinologist and found out I was suffering...
