Lucy's Struggle with the Ordinary Life of a Housewife

The I Love Lucy Show is a perfect example of comedy that pertains to the power struggle theme in more than one way. The main imbalances in comedy tend to lean towards class, race, tribal relations and gender. Although we see Lucy and her husband Ricky Ricardo's power struggle time after time with each one of these, we will mainly focus on gender and Lucy's direct struggle with being a married woman stuck in her house in the 50's. Lucy demonstrates her strong desire to be more than just a simple housewife and tries to prove herself talented enough to do things outside of the home episode after episode in the show. She exclaims to Ricky "here I am with all this talent bottled up, and you're always sitting on the cork!" Although this was a serious case for many women 50s, Lucy portrays the struggle against the life of an ordinary housewife in America during the time in a delightfully comedic way.

The I love Lucy Show does an excellent job in making this comedy more than just a pleasurable sitcom to watch; it empowers women and inspires them to be more than "just a housewife". People watch Lucy for the charming and funny moments, but stay for the bafflingly relatable material that reaches out to them.

We have to understand the struggle that women in America faced during the time the I Love Lucy Show aired. The I Love Lucy Show debuted in 1951 in a post-World War II era.
