'Marijuana is a safe drug and its use will not cause harm or lead to addiction to harder drugs'

i disagree, my essay labels clearly the medically proven effects of marijuana use, and although there is no proof that marijuana leads to addiction of harder drugs, many heroin and cocaine users say their first experience with drugs was marijuana.

I disagree with this statement and to back up my argument I have collected a range of information from health/medical sites, drug booklets and pamphlets and news/ magazine articles. Marijuana can be used as medicines, but it doesn't make it a safe drug.

What is marijuana?

Marijuana, is a drug made from the dried leaves and flowering tops of the hemp plant.

Marijuana has various psychological and physical effects. People usually smoke marijuana in cigarettes or pipes, but it can also be mixed with food and beverages. Many nations have laws that prohibit the cultivation, distribution, possession, and use of marijuana.

Marijuana is the most common illegal drug used in Australia. It is made from the dried flowers and leaves of a plant called Cannabis Sativa. Marijuana is usually smoked in hand-rolled cigarettes called "joints" or in water pipes called "bongs". Sometimes it is mixed with food such as cakes and cookies and eaten.

Some street names for marijuana are:

Grass

Cannabis

Mull

Pot

Dope

Weed

THC is the chemical in marijuana which makes you feel "high". This means you experience a change in mood and may see or feel things in a different way. When marijuana is smoked, THC goes quickly into the blood through the lungs. It then goes to the brain and this is when the "high" is felt. This can happen within a few minutes and can last up to five hours.
