A target market plays a critical part in the success or downfall and ineffective advertising can cause the loss of valuable resources and time. Advertising is considered as a nonpaid platform to communicate the target customers about the products and services (Hill, O'Sullivan & Hill, 2003). In today's market there are numerous tools and strategies that are implemented within the advertising field. Certainly over time advertising has taken on different forms and adapted considerably to the times. The advertising transformations have caused taste and preferences of target marketing to change their advertising patterns. Before the 1970's print advertising differed in comparison to what one may see today. For the purpose of this paper after reviewing a print advertisement from the Coca Cola Company a discussion will ensue regarding target market, variations in advertising, and the effect of social, cultural and ethical issues.

Pre-seventies Coca-Cola Print Advertisements

Prior to the 70's consumer outlook were simpler and not so modernistic, however, after the 70's that fluctuated dramatically due to the demands and expectations of the consumer target market In past print advertisings, target market generally comprised of specific age group, gender and occupation (Lancaster & Reynolds, 2005).In present day advertisements are geared to various criteria covering more than one specific type. Post 70's print advertisements began to cover a broader spectrum of consumers that ranged from various age levels, races, and even occupations. Former ad's focused on specific consumer segments now those same ads consider various elements such as geographic, demographic, and psychographics. Prior to 1970 Coca Cola's consumer market was geared to youth and after it shifted to cover all age genders.
