Marriage is the state of being a married couple voluntarily joined for life (or until divorce). When people are allowed to get married to only one person is called' Monogamy'. Marriage is also a creation ordinance of the highest calling. God has created us as men and women in order that we in godly marriages reflect some of his own nature, that we be a visualization of his glory.
There are a number of reasons for us to get married, these are a few examples, to commit yourself to the person you love for a lifetime and it is a gift of god and he intended men and women to live together.
This is emphasized by Jesus in the Bible:
But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.
Mark 10:6-9
The essence of the marriage ceremony is the exchange of vows. Exchanging of Vows is where the partner gives the sacrament to each other where each receives the sacrament from the other.
Here is a typical example of a marriage vow in a church:
'I take thee to be my wedded husband (or wife)
to have and hold
from this day forward
for better and worse
for richer and poorer
in sickness and in health
to love and to cherish
till death do us apart
according to God's holy law
and thereto I give thee my troth [promise]'
Both partners make this promise to each other and then the ring will be inserted into the third finger of the woman's hand, then...
