Running head: STRESS REDUCTION IN PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS

Australian Catholic University

Abstract

Where the causes and negative consequences of stress in professional psychologists are well known, little research has been conducted about the causes and negative consequences of stress psychology students and effective ways to reduce or prevent these problems. Research has found that psychology students are at risk for stress related psychological problems that will affect their health. It follows that mindfulness training may be a useful complement to the professional training of future psychologists. The present study examined the effects of one approach of stress reduction, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), for psychology students in university. The effectiveness of MBSR in reducing stress and improving health in a number of clinical populations is evident in many research, However a smaller number of evidence suggest that these programs are also effective for nonclinical programs at risk for stress-related problems.

Students studying psychology at the three campuses of Australian Catholic University volunteered to participate in a brief single session intervention. Pulse rate and Brief Mood Inspection Scale (BMIS) was administered pre-intervention and post-intervention. The study found that in comparison with pre-intervention participants reported significant high scores on relaxed mood and significant low pulse rate after the MBSR intervention. The results of this study suggest that mindfulness training is a promising method for helping psychology students in university, even when provided in a brief intervention.
