What it means to be an American? It means a lot to be an American. Especially now after what happened on September 11th. To be an American means being proud about all the things that we have that other people don't have. It means that you have to stand up for your rights, that some are people are unfortunate to not have. Being an American means that you can have the job that you want whether you are male or female.

Before September 11th people didn't think about how lucky we are to be Americans. Most people probably thought that being an American meant going to work and paying bills, but after that day they thought differently. They realized how easily it was for everything to turn to ruin in the blink of an eye. People started to care over night. They went and helped people by getting them things that they need dearly, and volunteering their efforts to save the lives of their fellow citizens.

We showed patriotism by getting flags. We all banded together to make the best of the situation and not let this happen again. That is what it means to be an American.

Being an American means that you have certain rights that cannot be taken away. In other countries people are treated horribly and have no rights. In America we have it good. If someone treats us unjust we can go to court and fight it. We have freedom of speech. If someone wanted to voice their opinion they could. They could say whatever they wanted and most of the time not be prosecuted for it. We have laws against racism, other countries don't. Other countries don't have these rights that, if you think about would be very hard to live without.
