This quote expresses George and Lennie's companion ship and their dependency on each other - a relationship often viewed in the movie. The story begins as George and Lennie escape from Weed, a small northern Californian city because a young girl had mistakenly accused Lennie of raping her, when he instead was simply trying to feel the fabric of her dress. The story moves on with the duo's search for new jobs, eventually leading them to Soledad, where they meet their new employer and co-workers.
For the rest of the movie, the actors have small encounters with soap opera-like drama, such as the old man, Candy, getting his dog shot and Curley getting his hand crushed by Lennie.
