Log for the first Act and 3 scenes of the book.

The Duke's first line in the play, "If music be the food of love, play on." In the first scene of act 1 the Duke is carrying on about how much he loves Olivia. Then it tells about how Olivia's brother had just passed away and she will mourn his death for seven years. I think it is a bit pathetic that the Duke is going after someone who is not at all interested in him. It also seems to me that the duke thinks that he can win Olivia's love because he is a Duke. The dramatic purpose of this scene is to introduce the main Characters and the plot.

Act 1 Scene 2

"When my tongue blabs, then let mine eyes not see." Said by the Captain. In Act 1 Scene 2, Shakespeare introduces Viola and how she comes onto the scene and what she is going to do in the play.

Viola's plan involved her dressing up as a girl and pretending to be a young man named Cesario who will work for the Duke. I think that Viola must be a very smart young lady if she came up with the plan to dress up as a man. I also live she must have come from a very wealthy family because she was able to give the Captain money for telling her in the information about her brother and to be on a ship.
