INTRODUCTION
California's missions are an important part of our state's history. When the Spanish came to settle Alta California in 1769, they sent soldiers and friars to build missions. The Spanish came to California in search of gold, spices, and other riches. They also believed the American Indians should become Catholics so they built missions to convert the Indians to Christianity.
Mission San Antonio de Padua, named after Saint Anthony of the Oaks, was the third mission founded in the 21 mission chain in Alta California. It was founded on July 14, 1771, by Father Junipero Serra because he thought there was need for another mission. Many years ago, Mission San Antonio de Padua produced wine, flour, and leather for several thousand people. Golden horses, called Palominos, were also raised at the mission.

Mission San Antonio de Padua is located in a wide valley full of large oaks. The area around the mission is very pretty with plenty of water from the river, which runs through the valley. The location is perfect for the mission, which raises a lot of pigs.
When you arrive at the mission the first thing you see is the Hannon Statue of the Blessed Serra. People rub the big toe of the statue for good luck. There is also a big garden that has a fountain, flowers, and plants. Along one side of the mission there is an Indian Cemetery that was started in 1804 and is surrounded by walls made of rocks.
There is a long, shaded corridor to walk along on the outside of the mission. The front of the mission has a wall with three bells on it. The...
