Mullet Mania

Party in the back, business in the front. What does this mean? This phrase is used by many people who try to describe one of the most notorious haircuts ever introduced into society. This haircut is known as the mullet. The mullet is any haircut in which the sides and top of the hair are significantly shorter than the back. I am going to talk about the popularity in the 80's of this haircut and how now it has become a pop culture icon in the new millennium. Money, movies, TV, the internet, and the humor of the look of the mullet are key reasons behind this popular culture icon for the millennium..

If looked up at the website of Dictionary.com, a mullet would be defined as "Any of various stout-bodied, edible fishes of the family Mugilidae, found worldwide in tropical and temperate coastal waters and some freshwater streams."

If the term mullet defines a type of fish then how did this type of haircut get branded with the name "mullet"? This can be answered by a well known rap group of the early 90's known as the Beastie Boys.

In "Hair-Raising History," Mary Spicuzza stated that in 1994 the Beastie Boys made a single that was devoted to focus on bad-hair legends of the 80's called "Mullet Heads". This song emphasized on a haircut that is short on the top and sides and long in the back. The song "Mullet Heads" was when the term mullet was first introduced. Later the Beastie Boys' magazine, Grand Royal, dedicated a whole issue to bad haircuts. The worst labeled haircut in this issue was given the name mullet. By this magazine, the term mullet was made famous with much of the public.
