Critical thinking is used during the "reverse engineering" process since many questions have been documented and statements made that require validation. Not only is critical thinking used to "reverse engineer" programs but critical thinking is employed on a larger scale when a new system is being developed to replace a legacy system. Many older business systems have large amounts of source code that are poorly documented or undocumented. Without clear documentation of these, sometimes complex, processes we must understand the original requirements of the system, the requirements of the new system and work with management to understand how all these requirements and needs integrate to produce a viable system for the business and to produce new solutions.
