Nepal

Nepal is found in south Asia, 28 N, and 84 E.

The capital of Nepal is Kathmandu. Other main cities include Lalitpur and Biratnagar. Nepal is north in relation to India.

Climate and Physical features

Because northern Nepal is located close to the Himalayan mountain range, the winters there can be very harsh and cold. The summers are also cool. However, in the south of Nepal, the summers can get very hot, and the winters are generally warm. The physical features vary from jagged mountains to rolling hills, and finally flat plains were the Ganges flows. Nepal is mostly forestland, but after the flat plains is where you will find the most woodland. Portrayed here is an "Everest trek", a picture from the Himalayas.

History

Nepal became a country when Prithvi Narayan Shah united all the hill states that had developed over many decades. Prithvi was the ruler of one of one of these states he united them in the late 18th century.

Soon after the Shah dynasty took over the "unified " throne and the recent king is the tenth in the Shah dynasty. A very important event happened in 1990 when a constitution for the new democratic kingdom.

Government

The official name of Nepal is the kingdom of Nepal. As of 2001, its king has been King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Deva. Also as of 2001, Nepal's new prime minister is Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Religion

This is a picture of one of the many shrines found in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley. In Nepal, 90% of the people are Hindu, 5%of the people are Buddhist, 3% are Islam, and 2% are other. Nepal is the only country in the world that is officially Hindu.
