Night

Elie Wiesel was a twelve year old boy from Sighet, Romania who spent much of his time studying the Talmud. His friend and instructor Moshe the Beadle was taken away by the Nazis. He escaped a near death experience and returned to the town of Sighet to warn the other Jews in the town about what the Nazis did to him. No one thought anything of it even when all the Jews in Sighet were placed in ghettos. In the spring the authorities began shipping trainloads of Jews to Auschwitz-Birkenau complex. Elie and his family were on the last train out. In the train car 80 Jews could barely move and had minimal food and water. When they arrive at the Birkenau death camp the Jews look on in horror at flames rising above huge ovens and the stench of burning flesh. Guards with billy clubs force Elie's group through a selection of those fir for work and those who are not.

Elie and Chlomo lie about their ages in order to pass the selection. His mother and three sisters disappear into Birkenau. Every day Elie and his father struggle so they can remain in the work force. After three weeks Elie and Chlomo are forced to march to Buna. During a second selection a doctor pulls Chlomo from abler men, however he passes the second selection and Elie undergoes surgery on his foot. Because the Front is getting very close to Buna Ellie and his group are forced to march to Gleiwitz which is forty-two miles away. Anyone who faltered was shot. After arriving the inmates pile together in a makeshift barracks. Three days later, living on mouthfuls of snow Elie and Chlomo pile into a train car with 98 other men on a ten day journey to...
